Common Questions

Questions before you start

Starting therapy can feel daunting. Here are answers to the questions Gemma is asked most often.

How long is a counselling session?

All counselling sessions last 50 minutes, including individual counselling, couples counselling, addiction support and online sessions. The free introductory call lasts 15 minutes.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

If something is troubling you, you can get in touch without needing a diagnosis or a crisis. The free 15-minute introduction gives you space to ask questions and decide whether working together feels right.

What happens in the first session?

We talk about what has brought you to counselling, what you hope for and any questions you have. You can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with, and we agree next steps together.

Is everything I share confidential?

Confidentiality is central to our work. There are limits, including circumstances involving a risk of serious harm. I explain these at the start so you understand how your information is handled.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no fixed number. We agree an approach that fits your needs and review it together. You can discuss short-term or ongoing support, and how to pause or end our work.

Can I have counselling online?

Online sessions offer talking therapy from a private space of your choice. We discuss whether video sessions suit your needs and agree the arrangements before starting. In-person sessions are also available in Solihull.

I'm worried about the cost — can you help?

Concessionary rates are available for people on low incomes, students, unemployed people, keyworkers and trainee counsellors. Please ask about the options when you enquire.
